Al Horford Joins Warriors After Leaving Celtics, Pursuing Title Aspirations

SAN FRANCISCO — Al Horford made the tough decision to leave the Boston Celtics after winning the 2024 NBA title, his first in 18 years. During an introductory press conference at Chase Center on Wednesday, Horford explained his choice to join the Golden State Warriors, stating, ‘It’s a great opportunity to compete and to win at a high level.’
Horford’s departure from Boston seemed unlikely when the season ended in April, as he was a fan favorite and considered an important part of the team. However, the situation changed when teammate Jayson Tatum suffered a serious injury during the playoffs, leading to a complete overhaul of the Celtics.
With Tatum likely sidelined for the 2025-26 season, the Celtics shifted their roster, which prompted Horford to consider moving on. ‘It wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave Boston, but if there was a place for me to go, it was this one,’ he said.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised Horford’s skills, noting his defensive abilities and versatility. ‘He’s not just any space 5 — it’s Al Horford,’ Kerr added. ‘He rebounds, defends, smart, good passer … just watching him today, you can see the fit, how smooth it is.’
Horford agreed to a two-year deal worth $5.7 million with a player option for the following season. He mentioned that the offseason was unusual due to waiting for other contracts to finalize, which led to delays in his signing.
As Horford adjusts to his new environment, he will focus on training and preparing for the upcoming season, aiming to make a significant impact with the Warriors and help them pursue another championship.
