Hull KR Secure Historic Super League Grand Final Spot with Narrow Victory
Hull Kingston Rovers have advanced to their first-ever Super League Grand Final following a tightly contested 10-8 victory over Warrington Wolves at Craven Park on Friday. The match was a display of resilience and defensive tenacity, with Hull KR holding off a determined late surge from Warrington.
The home team took the lead with a try from James Batchelor in the 18th minute, which was followed by a controversial effort from Joe Burgess. Despite protests from the visiting side, the try was awarded, giving Hull KR a 10-0 advantage at half-time after a conversion by Mikey Lewis.
In the first half, Warrington’s best chance was a disallowed try from Matt Dufty, deemed void due to an obstruction. The Wolves were territorially outperformed, struggling to capitalize on their opportunities.
Warrington mounted a comeback in the second half with Matty Ashton‘s two tries, which brought them within two points. However, fullback Josh Thewlis was unable to convert either try, leaving the score at 10-8.
The Robins’ defense became the focal point as they withstood a relentless assault from the Wolves. In the closing stages, Warrington had two tries disallowed — one from Josh Thewlis and a late effort from Toby King — sealing their fate as Hull KR’s defense held firm under intense pressure.
Speaking after the match, Hull KR head coach Willie Peters expressed pride in his team’s performance, remarking, “I’m proud, really, really proud of the players, proud of the staff and everyone involved because it’s been a lot of hard work to get here.”
Meanwhile, Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess noted his disappointment but acknowledged Hull KR’s strong season, “We showed lots of spirit. It’s disappointing to lose on some of those small moments – they all add up to the end result and it didn’t go our way tonight.”
Hull KR’s progression to the final marks a significant turnaround for a club that faced relegation to the Championship just eight years ago and struggled at the bottom of the table during the COVID-19-impacted 2020 campaign.
The Robins now await the winner of the semi-final clash between reigning champions Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards. The Super League Grand Final is scheduled to take place at Old Trafford on October 12, where Hull KR will compete for the prestigious title.
