Jason Kidd Stands by Ryan Nembhard’s Role with Mavericks
Dallas, Texas – Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has shown strong support for Ryan Nembhard, who is now the team’s starting point guard. Kidd’s trust in Nembhard has grown throughout the season, especially after the player returned from a left knee sprain.
Nembhard began the season as a bench player but quickly fell out of the team’s rotation. His early opportunities diminished as Kidd opted for Brandon Williams and D'Angelo Russell as primary point guards. However, upon returning from injury, Nembhard made a significant impact. He was reinstated to the starting lineup in November and has retained that position since.
Before a recent game against the Denver Nuggets, Kidd expressed his confidence in Nembhard. “He knows how to get guys the ball,” Kidd said. “There’s a trust… He understands how to play the game.” This bond with his teammates is also reflected in his on-court chemistry with players like Cooper Flagg, who has benefited from Nembhard’s pass-first style.
During the Mavericks’ win over the Nuggets, Nembhard recorded 11 points and seven assists, contributing to the team’s +24 scoring margin while he was on the court. His ability to read defenses and create opportunities for others, including finding Flagg for multiple scores, has shown why Kidd continues to trust him.
Nembhard excels in pick-and-roll situations, positioning Dallas’ big man, Anthony Davis, for effective scoring opportunities. Kidd highlighted this unique skill, stating, “He’d rather set up one of his teammates for a dunk than hunt his own shot.” This makes Nembhard’s presence essential for the Mavericks’ offense, which is rich in play finishers.
As the season progresses, it is clear that Nembhard’s growth is crucial for the Mavericks. His ascent as a starting point guard could solidify his future with the team, especially as Kidd envisions him as a foundational element going forward.
In contrast, Kidd did not have an update regarding Anthony Davis’ recent injury during a loss to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. Injuries have hampered Davis, who left the game after just 11 minutes.
The Mavericks aim to rebound in their next game against the Sacramento Kings, maintaining focus on their internal depth while awaiting updates on Davis’ condition.
