Khalil Herbert Seeks Trade: Cowboys, Saints, and Chiefs Emerge as Top Destinations
Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert is reportedly seeking a trade after falling down the depth chart, according to recent reports. Herbert, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had a promising start to his career with the Bears. Despite his unremarkable draft capital, he finished his rookie season with 433 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 103 carries. He continued to build on this success, recording 731 and 611 rushing yards in 2022 and 2023, respectively, under head coach Matt Eberflus.
However, Herbert’s role in the offense has significantly diminished in the final year of his rookie contract. With the arrival of free agent signee D’Andre Swift and the emergence of former fourth-round pick Roschon Johnson, Herbert has appeared in just six games this season, managing only eight carries for 16 yards and a touchdown. The Bears have given Herbert permission to seek a trade, indicating he is not part of their long-term plans.
The Dallas Cowboys are considered one of the most likely trade destinations for Herbert. The Cowboys, currently 3-4, are in need of talent to salvage their season and potentially secure a Wild Card spot. With their current running back situation lacking depth and performance, Herbert could be a valuable addition. Despite owner Jerry Jones‘s financial constraints following the extensions of quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, Herbert’s potential acquisition would not require a significant trade return, making him an attractive option.
The New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs are also potential suitors. The Saints, despite having Alvin Kamara as their primary running back, could use a better backup. Herbert could help ease the burden on Kamara, especially with Jamaal Williams underperforming and Kendre Miller struggling to gain favor with head coach Dennis Allen.
The Kansas City Chiefs, dealing with the absence of Isiah Pacheco and the declining performance of Kareem Hunt, are in need of a reliable backup running back. Herbert’s addition could benefit the Chiefs’ offense, providing a more consistent option behind Pacheco when he returns.
The NFL Trade Deadline is on November 5, and the slow-developing trade market for running backs has not yet seen significant movement. However, with Herbert’s proven efficiency and explosiveness, he remains a promising candidate for a trade that could enhance his fantasy value and contribute to his new team’s success.
