Jon Landau, the prolific, Oscar-winning producer known for his exceptional work alongside filmmaker James Cameron on the iconic films ‘Titanic‘ and ‘Avatar,’ has passed away at the age of 63.
News of Landau’s death was confirmed by his son Jamie Landau to The Hollywood Reporter, with the producer having breathed his last in Los Angeles on Friday. The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Jon Landau, hailing from a family deeply entrenched in the film industry as the son of producers, made a significant impact as a producer on various films, including ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’ and ‘Dick Tracy,’ before his tenure at Fox overseeing notable productions such as ‘Die Hard 2‘ and ‘The Last of the Mohicans.’
His close relationship with director James Cameron led to memorable collaborations like ‘True Lies,’ where Landau’s dedication and prowess were evident during the rigorous four-month shoot in the Florida Keys.
Upon deciding to return to producing, Landau chose to partner with Cameron on what would turn out to be the massive hit ‘Titanic,’ a film that required innovative logistical solutions including the construction of Fox Baja Studios in Mexico.
