Major Closure of London’s M25 Motorway for Gantry Replacement and Bridge Construction

London‘s orbital motorway, the M25, is set to undergo a significant closure for the replacement of a gantry and construction of a gyratory bridge along a crucial southwestern stretch. Beginning this weekend, the closure, managed by National Highways, will impact a heavily trafficked section between junctions 9 and 10 in Surrey, necessitating a diversion of tens of thousands of vehicles onto local roads. This closure, scheduled from Friday night until early Monday morning, aims to facilitate critical infrastructure improvements.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area, with most vehicles rerouted further southeast at junction 8 near Reigate to join a 19-mile diversion route. While the first closure of the M25 saw a successful operation, concerns linger for the upcoming closure due to the more intricate engineering work involved in building the bridge rather than demolishing it this time. National Highways remains vigilant to ensure minimal disruptions for motorists.

Jonathan Wade, a senior project manager overseeing the operation, emphasized the precision and complexity of placing 72 concrete beams for the new bridge, indicating that the works may take longer to complete. Despite some contingency plans in place, ensuring the M25 reopens for Monday’s rush hour remains a top priority. Wade expressed concerns over driver compliance and urged motorists to heed signage and warnings to prevent gridlocks and possible violations.

During the closure, drivers must adhere to diversion routes, with special consideration for taller lorries that will continue onto a separate diversion at junction 9. A notable exception will be granted to guests of the Ramada hotel at Cobham Services on the M25, who will receive a guided escort from junction 9. Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys diligently and acknowledge the potential challenges of using alternative routes.

The closure of this critical stretch of the M25 between junctions 9 and 10 underscores the necessity for infrastructure enhancements to accommodate the daily traffic flow of over 300,000 vehicles. National Highways’ £317 million project aims to alleviate congestion, improve traffic efficiency, and enhance safety, offering a glimpse into the ongoing efforts to optimize the UK’s busiest motorway.
