MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Ja Morant has been medically cleared to play for the Memphis Grizzlies in their season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. Morant, who dealt with a sprained ankle during the preseason, had been listed as week-to-week but is now ready to return to the court.

Morant, a two-time NBA All-Star, is crucial for the Grizzlies’ offense. Last season, he averaged 23.2 points and 7.3 assists per game but struggled with injuries, playing just 50 games. He has not played more than 65 games in a season since his rookie year, when he appeared in 67 games.

While Morant’s return provides a lift for Memphis, the team will be without guard Ty Jerome for at least four weeks due to a calf strain. Jerome suffered the injury in the final preseason game against the Miami Heat. He joined the Grizzlies this offseason on a three-year deal after averaging 12.5 points and 3.4 assists with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season.

In addition to Jerome’s absence, Memphis faces other injury concerns. Jaren Jackson Jr. is expected to start alongside Morant, but the team will miss guards Scotty Pippen Jr. for at least 12 weeks due to toe surgery. Centers Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke are also sidelined as they recover from recent surgeries.

The Grizzlies will seek to navigate these injury challenges as they tip off the new season. Head coach Tuomas Iisalo stated that they are looking into internal and external options to bolster their roster. Memphis is particularly relying on younger players like Javon Small, who had a strong preseason and could step up during this period.

With tip-off set for 8 p.m. EST at the FedExForum, the Grizzlies hope Morant’s return will help them start the season strong against a competitive Western Conference.
