Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit Resigns Citing Personal Reasons

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Banwarilal Purohit has tendered his resignation citing personal reasons. In his resignation letter, he mentioned his personal reasons and certain other commitments as the basis for stepping down from his position as the governor of Punjab and Administrator of Union Territory, Chandigarh. The resignation follows Purohit’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.

Purohit’s resignation comes at a time when the BJP emerged victorious in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, securing all three posts and dealing a blow to the Congress-AAP alliance. The opposition parties have alleged ballot paper tampering despite the BJP’s success.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking fresh polls under the supervision of a retired judge, but the bench denied interim relief. Subsequently, an AAP councillor requested an urgent hearing of the plea challenging the high court order before the Supreme Court.

Purohit has been at odds with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on various issues in the past. His resignation comes after a series of confrontations between the governor and the AAP government. Purohit had previously blocked bills passed by the Punjab assembly and questioned the working of Chief Minister Mann.

It remains to be seen who will succeed Banwarilal Purohit as the new governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh Union Territory.
