Sydney, Australia — Qantas Airways has announced that Australian designer Rebecca Vallance will create the airline’s new uniforms, set to debut in 2027. This will be the first major redesign in over a decade, replacing the current navy, ruby red, and fuchsia outfits that have been worn since 2013.

The decision comes after a competitive selection process that highlights the importance of the uniform in representing the airline globally. Vallance expressed her excitement and the weight of the responsibility that comes with designing attire for Qantas staff. ‘It doesn’t get better than this,’ she said. ‘This is the dream.’

In a bid to create a uniform that resonates with its 17,500 uniformed employees, Qantas commissioned a survey to gather feedback from pilots, cabin crew, and other staff regarding their preferences for comfort, durability, and functionality.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said, ‘We want the new uniform to reflect the pride our team feel when they wear it. This redesign is a collaborative journey that will be shaped by our people every step of the way.’

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Vallance, who has gained recognition for her elegant designs worn by British royalty and Hollywood celebrities, including Princess Beatrice and Paris Hilton. She aims to incorporate timeless elegance into the new Qantas uniforms, aiming for designs that cater to both style and practicality.

When questioned about including First Nations elements in the new design, Vallance noted that it was still early in the process, but she is committed to considering various design aspects thoroughly. ‘This will be a fully considered design process,’ she said.

The launch of the new uniform is part of a broader strategy for Qantas, which includes major changes across the airline, such as the largest fleet renewal program in its history.
