Madame Tussauds London has introduced a new waxwork figure inspired by the iconic drag queen, RuPaul Charles. The figure, which is a tribute to the creator and host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is the first major character at the attraction to wear drag. Designed by Zaldy Goco, a long-time collaborator of RuPaul, the custom-made blue gown features R-shaped earrings and a reproduction of an Anne Boleyn-initialled pearl necklace. It also includes a recreation of royal family order badges with the faces of Michelle Visage, Diana Ross, and Oprah Winfrey, surrounded by ribbons.

RuPaul’s Drag Race, a reality series that began in 2009, has gained international acclaim, with over 15 national versions airing to find the most talented drag queens. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World, one of the popular spin-offs, has been airing on BBC Three and iPlayer. Michelle Visage, a Radio 2 presenter and judge on the show since the third series of the US franchise, played a role in unveiling the new figure at Madame Tussauds London. Impressed by the likeness, Visage praised the attention to detail, particularly in capturing RuPaul’s essence.

The figure of RuPaul in drag will become a part of Madame Tussauds London’s fashion runway experience, coinciding with the celebration of London Fashion Week‘s 40th anniversary in February. Additionally, the waxwork museum will feature figures of Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, Victoria Beckham, and Harry Styles in the same exhibit.

This iconic waxwork is the first drag figure to be introduced by Madame Tussauds London. The renowned designer Zaldy stated that he wanted the figure to be an authentic representation of RuPaul’s style and glamour, emulating the grandeur of the outfits created for RuPaul’s Drag Race. The bespoke creation includes elements that capture the essence of working with RuPaul, reflecting emotions such as fun, joy, and happiness.

Jo Kinsey, the studio manager for Madame Tussauds London, expressed that the figure truly encapsulates RuPaul’s style with a playful nod to British royal themes. RuPaul’s arrival at the original Madame Tussauds in London seems fitting as the queen of drag who fearlessly champions authenticity, expression, and unity.
