Sen. Tommy Tuberville Urges Strong Support for Trump Agenda and Abolition of Department of Education
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) has been vocal in his support for President-elect Donald Trump‘s agenda, emphasizing the need for strong alignment within the Republican Party. In recent comments, Tuberville stated that incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has “no choice” but to advocate hard for Trump’s policies despite some internal party concerns.
Tuberville, who initially backed Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) for the Senate Majority Leader role, expressed confidence in Thune’s ability to work productively with the Trump administration. He emphasized the importance of unity among Republicans, suggesting that those not aligned with Trump’s agenda should step aside. Tuberville also highlighted the urgency of confirming Trump’s Cabinet appointments, including the contentious nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as the next Attorney General.
In addition to his stance on Trump’s agenda, Tuberville has doubled down on his support for abolishing the U.S. Department of Education. Following Trump’s presidential victory, Tuberville reiterated his backing for Trump’s plan to close the Department of Education, arguing that federal involvement has led to a decline in education performance. He criticized the federal government and teachers’ unions for the current state of education, advocating for states to take control over education decisions.
Tuberville acknowledged the challenges in passing such a measure, noting that it would require 60 votes in the Senate and likely face significant opposition from Democrats. Despite these hurdles, he remains committed to the idea, suggesting that the Department of Education has not improved education outcomes over the past few decades[2]).
