Six Flags to Close America and Hurricane Harbor After 2025 Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced today its plan to close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland, after the 2025 operating season. This decision is part of an ongoing strategy to optimize the company’s park portfolio.
The approximately 500-acre property is being targeted for redevelopment. Six Flags has engaged CBRE, a leading commercial real estate firm, to assist with the sale of the land.
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Richard A. Zimmerman, Six Flags President and CEO. He added, “Marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment.”
Zimmerman acknowledged the difficulty of this decision, particularly the impact it will have on park associates and guests. “We are grateful to our park associates who work hard to create lifelong memories for our guests. Six Flags is committed to supporting all impacted associates through the closure process at the end of this year,” he said.
Approximately 70 full-time employees work at Six Flags America, and the company promises to offer severance and benefits to eligible associates affected by the closure. The final day of operation for the park will be Sunday, November 2, 2025.
The closure is not expected to significantly affect Six Flags’ financial results for 2025. All 2025 season passes and tickets will be honored during the final operating season.
Six Flags America, which opened in 1974, has been a staple in the local community, featuring a variety of thrill rides and attractions. However, it has not received major investments in recent years, with the last roller coaster added in 2014.
