Treasury Explores $1 Coin Featuring Trump’s Image for 250th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Treasury Department is considering drafts of a new $1 coin that would feature President Donald Trump‘s image. This move is part of the preparations to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach confirmed the designs in a post on X, stating, “No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday are real.” He expressed excitement about sharing more information once the ongoing government shutdown is resolved.
The proposed design of the coin features a profile of Trump on one side, while the opposite side displays Trump with a raised fist in front of an American flag, alongside the words “Fight. Fight. Fight.” This is a notable phrase that aligns with Trump’s leadership style.
Beaches’s comments come in light of the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which included a provision for a dollar coin to celebrate the U.S. semiquincentennial.
According to federal law, coins cannot bear the image of a living or recently deceased president. However, once finalized, this coin would be considered legal currency.
A Treasury Department spokesperson elaborated on the draft design, stating it represents the enduring spirit of the nation and democracy despite challenges. The spokesperson added that a final design decision has not been made yet.
Historically, other commemorative coins have honored past presidents shortly after their deaths. The Treasury Department previously minted coins honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, among others.
The Treasury has already issued other commemorative coins recently, such as the Harriet Tubman and Greatest Generation coins in 2024, both of which sold well. Additionally, the best-selling commemorative coin remains the U.S. Statue of Liberty coin from 1986, which sold nearly 15.5 million units.
As the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary, plans for the new coin continue amid a contentious political climate.
