Warriors Rookie Will Richard Shines in NBA Debut Against Lakers
LOS ANGELES — Warriors rookie Will Richard made an impressive start to his NBA career on Tuesday night, scoring five points in 14 minutes during a 119-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Head coach Steve Kerr awarded Richard the game ball for his first basket after the game.
“We gave him the game ball afterward for his first hoop,” Kerr said. “I told the guys, usually, I know when it is somebody’s first hoop, and I make sure we get the ball from the officials right away. I completely forgot tonight. The reason I forgot is that Will looks like he is in his seventh year. He doesn’t look like a rookie out there.”
Richard, the 56th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, showcased his skills after transitioning from a three-point specialist at Florida to an all-around player. In his debut, he recorded five points, one assist, and one rebound, impressing both his teammates and coaching staff.
“Steve lets ’em play. And Will’s a national champion,” said veteran teammate Buddy Hield, referring to Richard’s role in Florida’s recent NCAA championship victory. “He understands how to play and win.”
Richard’s strong performance included a defensive steal, leading to a fast break that resulted in an alley-oop. Even though his stats may not stand out at first glance, earning minutes as a second-round pick is significant.
“Getting production from deep in the second round is important,” general manager Mike Dunleavy said. “Richard has the potential to contribute.”
During the preseason, Kerr recognized Richard’s instincts and ability to adapt to the Warriors’ style of play. His early contributions suggest he could become a valuable asset.
As the NBA season progresses, Richard aims to continue developing and contributing to the Warriors, a team he joined alongside fellow Gator legend Al Horford. “That’s staying with me,” Richard said about keeping the game ball, hinting at more milestones to come.
