Giants Coach Evades QB Questions After Offense Struggles in Season Opener

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants are facing scrutiny after a dismal offensive performance in their season opener against the Washington Commanders. The Giants, who lost 21-6, managed just 231 total yards and failed to score a single touchdown.
Following the game, Giants coach Brian Daboll was noncommittal about the starting quarterback position, leading to speculation about whether rookie Jaxson Dart might take over from veteran Russell Wilson, who completed only 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards.
Daboll emphasized that the entire team needed to improve, stating, “This game isn’t on Russell Wilson. Want to make that clear. I have confidence in Russell; we got to do a better job all the way around.” However, the Giants’ struggles in Week 1 raised questions about Wilson’s performance and the timing of any potential change.
In the absence of starting left tackle Andrew Thomas, listed as doubtful for the upcoming match against the Dallas Cowboys, the situation for the Giants only gets more complicated. Thomas is recovering from a Lisfranc injury, which hampers the offensive line’s performance, adding pressure on Wilson.
Dart, who is currently serving as Wilson’s backup, remains focused on his role despite fan and media calls for him to start. “I don’t pay attention to that stuff,” Dart said. “My job is just to be the best teammate to Russ. It’s all about preparing myself for when the time comes.”
The offensive struggles are not new for the Giants. They had already shown a lack of consistency last season, averaging just 16.1 points per game. Receivers highlighted the need for better communication and execution moving forward.
<p“Anytime that you don’t win, people talk and things like that happen,” said wide receiver Malik Nabers. “We have to focus on the little things … getting out of the huddle quicker, spreading the ball around. We have talent; we just have to use it.”
The Giants will need to address these issues quickly as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Cowboys. If they lose again, it could mark the seventh time in nine years that they started the season 0-2, a scenario that has typically led to missing the playoffs.
