Sinner Dominates Cilic, Advances at China Open

Beijing, China – Jannik Sinner, the world No. 2, made a strong start at the China Open by defeating Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2 in the first round on September 25, 2025. The match marked Sinner’s return to the ATP 500 event after losing the final last year, where he also lost his No. 1 ranking.
Sinner, 24, is aiming to reclaim the trophy he won in 2023. He showcased his skills by saving the only break point he faced during the match, highlighting his dominance on the court. “I try to put a lot of concentration into the first-round matches, because I know that many things can go wrong,” Sinner said. He emphasized the importance of early preparation, stating, “I came here quite early in order to feel the conditions.”
His victory moves him closer to rival Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Year-End race. Sinner is currently trailing Alcaraz by 2,590 points and aims to keep pace with him throughout the remaining tournament months.
Sinner will face French qualifier Hugo Gaston next, marking their second meeting in as many months. Gaston secured his first tour-level win recently and is keen for another upset in Beijing.
Other notable matches from Day 1 included Alex de Minaur defeating a home favorite, and Alexander Zverev advancing with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. With a total prize purse of $4,016,050 and strong performances from the top players, the China Open promises to be an exciting event this year.
