LOS ANGELES, California — Matthew Lillard, known for his iconic role as Stu Macher in the 1996 horror classic Scream, expressed his nerves about reprising the character in the upcoming Scream 7, set to hit theaters on February 27, 2024.

In a recent interview, Lillard, 55, shared his mixed emotions surrounding his return to the franchise. “I’m nervous, because at this point in my life, the only thing I can do is sort of ruin how people consider Stu,” he said. “If I come back and I suck or I was lame, that’s not great.”

Since its debut, the Scream series, created by Wes Craven, has captivated audiences and evolved alongside modern horror trends. The seventh installment, anticipated to include several legacy characters, aims to blend classic elements with new narratives. The last film primarily focused on new protagonists, especially the Carpenter sisters, but Scream 7 will return to its origin with familiar faces.

While Lillard’s character, who famously met his demise in the original, is set to return, details about his involvement remain limited. “I haven’t seen the movie yet. I don’t know if it works, but it’s a risk,” he commented, noting his excitement but also anxiety for how fans will react.

Laurie Metcalf, who played Nancy Loomis in Scream 2, has also stirred rumors about her return. In a red carpet interview, she cryptically responded that she would be down to reprise her role, but whether she has been officially asked remains unclear.

The build-up to Scream 7 has fans buzzing as they anticipate the first trailer and confirmation of other legacy character appearances. “I hope people like it. It’s part of our legacy,” Lillard stated, eager for the audience’s reception of the new film.

With the rich history of the Scream franchise and its blend of horror and humor, fans are left wondering how the new film will honor its past while carving out its future.
