Mackenzie Blackwood Avalanche Season Opener

Blackwood, CO – Mackenzie Blackwood, the goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche, will not travel with the team for Tuesday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Kings due to a lower body injury. This decision means that Scott Wedgewood will take the starting role for the game, which starts at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Blackwood was anticipated to be the No. 1 goalie heading into the season, but his injury, described as week-to-week, will keep him sidelined. Last season, Blackwood played 56 games between the San Jose Sharks and the Avalanche, achieving a record of 28 wins, 21 losses, and 6 overtime losses, along with a save percentage of .912 and a goals-against average of 2.55.

Despite this setback, the organization expects Blackwood to assume the majority of the starting duties once he is fully cleared to play. The Avalanche are focused on providing both Wedgewood and backup Trent Miner with a solid start to the season.

In related NHL news, other players are navigating injuries ahead of the season’s opening week. New York Rangers‘ forward, Miller, is set to play after recovering from a lower-body injury, while several players in Buffalo and Washington are also being monitored for injuries ahead of their respective season openers.

The Avalanche will finalize their roster ahead of the 3 p.m. MT deadline, with adjustments expected as they navigate the early part of the season without Blackwood.
