Playstation 5 Sales Comparison

City, State – The latest VGChartz sales report reveals a competitive landscape in the gaming console market as of August 2025. The report shows that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) continues to lag behind its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 (PS4), in both U.S. and worldwide sales.

Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has sold 26.6 million units in the U.S., while the PS4 sold 25.27 million units during its first 58 months. In contrast, the current gap between the PS4 and PS5 stands at 1.33 million units, with the PS4 recently outselling the PS5 by 22,653 units this past month.

Despite a strong start, the PS5 is 8.32 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4, which totaled 34.93 million in the U.S.

Worldwide, the PS5 has sold 79.09 million units. However, the PS4 leads by 3.21 million units, reflecting a sales gap that has only widened by 20,389 units in the latest month.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2 has made headlines with record-breaking sales, selling 2.4 million units in its first three months, surpassing the PS4’s previous record of 2.2 million in the same timeframe. According to Circana, hardware spending increased by 32% in August 2025 fueled by Switch 2 sales, although overall console sales have seen declines.

Mat Piscatella from Circana commented, “The Switch 2 is trending 77% ahead of the original Switch’s performance at a similar point in time.” This growth emphasizes the significance of the Switch 2’s launch timing and availability, which has reportedly been better than that of previous consoles.

The overall sales performance of the PS5 has raised questions about its future, especially with rising prices and competition. However, some industry experts believe upcoming game titles, such as GTA 6, will give PS5 sales a much-needed boost in the future.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, analysts will be watching closely how both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 fare against this backdrop of competition and changing consumer preferences.
