Borja Sainz Hat-Trick Secures Victory for Norwich City Against Derby County
Norwich City emerged victorious over Derby County in a contentious 3-2 win at Pride Park, with Borja Sainz‘s hat-trick proving decisive in the Championship fixture. The match marked the second consecutive win for Norwich under the leadership of Head Coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, bringing their total to 11 points in the league.
The game commenced with an early opportunity for Derby County, featuring former Ipswich attacker Kayden Jackson who failed to convert a chance created by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. This missed opportunity was a prelude to a sluggish start from Norwich City, which gradually improved as the game progressed.
Norwich gained momentum as the match continued, with their first significant opportunity falling to Jose Cordoba, whose header failed to find the target. Subsequent attempts by Sainz and Kenzo Goudmijn also failed to materialize into goals, maintaining a goalless scoreline for most of the first half.
Controversy surrounded Sainz’s opening goal just before halftime. His score, assisted by Sargent, stayed on the board despite Derby’s protests that the ball had gone out of play in the buildup. This goal meant Derby had to go on the offensive in the second half.
Derby County equalized 16 minutes after halftime, with Craig Forsyth capitalizing on Curtis Nelson‘s knock-down to fire past Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Their joy was short-lived as Sainz scored again, this time delivering a powerful shot into the far corner after advancing from 30 yards out.
Derby came very close to finding an equalizer when Eiran Cashin‘s long-distance effort hit the crossbar, which was followed by a sequence of counterattacks from Norwich. Sainz completed his hat-trick by tapping in during a swift counter-move, only for Corey Blackett-Taylor of Derby to make it 3-2 with a late goal.
Despite Derby’s final attempts during set-pieces, Norwich held their lead to secure three points. This victory brings Norwich closer to their Championship goals while adding pressure to Derby’s Head Coach Paul Warne.
Significant players for Norwich included Angus Gunn, who earned an 8 on performance ratings for several key saves, and Sainz, who dominated the field with his crucial hat-trick, receiving a stellar rating of 9.
The match statistics highlighted an interesting dynamic, with Norwich maintaining 58 percent possession and taking a total of eight shots, four of which were on target. Derby took 15 shots with five on target, reflecting a persistent challenge throughout the game.
The match attendance was a significant draw, with 28,915 supporters witnessing a thrilling encounter, officiated by referee Oliver Langford.
