Clashes Erupt as Protesters Confront ICE Agents in Broadview
BROADVIEW, Illinois — A tense standoff unfolded Friday morning outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility as federal agents clashed with protesters opposing the Trump administration‘s immigration enforcement practices. Demonstrators gathered outside the facility at 1930 Beach St. around 5 a.m. to voice their dissent.
The protest escalated when ICE and border patrol agents began using tear gas and pepper spray against the crowd as they attempted to block vehicles from leaving the facility. Eyewitnesses reported that clashes erupted after agents tried to pass through the barricades set up by the protesters.
Kat Abughazaleh, one of the protesters and a candidate for Congress in Illinois’ 9th district, described the scene, stating, “All of us joined arms, we did not let the van pass. ICE came in and tried to drive the car through us.” She recounted seeing one protester taken into custody, calling it an “atrocious act.”
Groups like ICE have ramped up enforcement in the Chicago area recently under a campaign known as Operation Midway Blitz. Reports indicate that this campaign has caused an increase in sightings of federal immigration agents and detentions. Representative Lauren Underwood noted earlier this week that around 250 individuals had reportedly been detained since the start of September.
Throughout the morning’s protests, demonstrators were repeatedly met with harsh tactics from law enforcement. At around 8:30 a.m., agents were seen on the roof of the building using pepper spray and tear gas to disperse crowds blocking the exits. Complaints from those present indicated that the chemical agents caused irritation, forcing many to flee the area.
Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss were among local politicians present, expressing solidarity with the protesters. Stratton emphasized, “People are here to peacefully protest,” denouncing the recent uptick in immigration enforcement as unjust actions against local communities.
The altercations continued throughout the morning as ICE agents attempted to maneuver through the crowd. This interaction drew sharp criticism from many participants, including Alderman Andre Vasquez, who highlighted the oppressive nature of the federal enforcement: “We have here a federal government that is actively working against its people. They are building the same system that they are going to use for everyone else.”
As the situation calmed later in the day, dozens of protesters remained outside the facility, pledging to continue their demonstrations until the federal operations cease.
