BJP Nominates Ujjwal Nikam in Place of Poonam Mahajan for Mumbai North Central Seat
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant decision by replacing incumbent Lok Sabha MP Poonam Mahajan with well-known lawyer Ujjwal Deorai Nikam for the Mumbai North Central constituency.
In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Poonam Mahajan, daughter of the late Pramod Mahajan, secured victories in Mumbai North Central, defeating prominent opponents like Priya Dutt, daughter of the late Sunil Dutt. Poonam Mahajan was also the former president of BJP’s youth wing.
Ujjwal Deorai Nikam, a recognized figure in legal circles and the leading government counsel in the 26/11 attacks case, has been selected as Poonam Mahajan’s replacement. The decision by BJP leaders to opt for Nikam over Mahajan was based on organizational feedback and a thorough search process.
The announcement comes shortly after the Congress nominated Varsha Gaikwad, Mumbai unit chief and Dharavi MLA, as the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate for the same Mumbai North Central seat.
Maharashtra, the state with the second-highest number of MPs after Uttar Pradesh, plays a crucial role in the parliamentary elections. As the voting phases progress, the political landscape in Mumbai is heating up with the BJP’s move to field Nikam against the MVA candidate Gaikwad.
The BJP’s dominance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra, winning 23 out of 25 contested seats, showcases the party’s stronghold in the state. With Nikam’s entry into the electoral arena, a new dynamic is expected in the Mumbai North Central constituency contest.
