Jordan Poyer’s Future with the Bills Remains Uncertain
Buffalo, NY – Jordan Poyer, regarded as one of the best defensive players in recent football history, is currently sidelined, despite being under contract with the Buffalo Bills. After a season with the Miami Dolphins, Poyer returned to the Bills in August, stating, “This is where my heart is.”
Poyer has had a remarkable career with the Bills, featuring in 107 games from 2017 to 2023. During that time, he recorded 22 interceptions, 682 tackles, and 11 sacks. In 2024, he played 16 games with the Dolphins, where he made 98 tackles. His impressive stats have made it unclear why he has yet to play this season.
Currently, Poyer is a member of the Bills’ practice squad. While the team can promote him to the active roster, they have chosen not to do so for the first three weeks of the season. There are questions regarding Poyer’s readiness after signing late in the offseason, and the possibility that the team may be using him more as a veteran presence than a regular starter.
This season, the Bills have Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop starting at safety, with Damar Hamlin as the backup. Poyer, now 34, is seen as being on the decline of his career, but there are still expectations he could contribute as the season progresses.
The Bills hope to utilize Poyer’s experience, as he remains a key figure within the team structure. The complexity of his situation could shift in the coming weeks, especially if injuries or performance issues arise within the current safety lineup.
