TORONTO — Josh Minott, 22, is carving out a new chapter with the Boston Celtics after a challenging stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minott sported “NOW” and “LATER” tattoos on his shins, a reminder from his uncle urging him to work hard in the present to secure a better future. After playing just 93 games across three seasons with Minnesota and averaging only five minutes per game, Minott is eager to capitalize on his fresh start in Boston.

The Celtics are seeking young talent to bolster their lineup, and Minott could fulfill a vital role in coach Joe Mazzulla’s defensive strategy. In a recent preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Minott demonstrated his capabilities by contributing 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals.

“I’d like to think [Wednesday] was a carryover in terms of the things I was talking about: hustle, mucking up the game, steals, staying in front of my man,” Minott said. “This is year four. I feel like I’ve got a pretty good sense of the spacing of the game and where to be.”

While Minott has shown promise on defense, his shooting from distance remains a work in progress. He attempted only 59 three-pointers in Minnesota and missed all five he took against the Grizzlies in that game.

Mazzulla praised Minott’s knack for impactful plays. “He just has a knack for the situational play on both ends of the floor,” Mazzulla said. “He’s got some good versatility and a knack for the ball.”

With competition for swingman minutes heating up, Minott is vying for playing time against 2023 second-round pick Jordan Walsh, who is currently dealing with an oblique injury.

Minott views his return to Boston as a significant career transition. “I love where my feet are. I love the environment,” he said. “You have to invest in yourself at some point, you might as well do it now,” he added, referencing his tattoos again.

Minott’s journey began at age 12 when his uncle shared the life lesson that inspired his body art. “Ever since that day I’ve tried to live in the now,” he said. “Even to 22.” His competitive spirit became apparent as he disrupted plays in the preseason, a trait Mazzulla admires.

As the Celtics build their roster around young talent, Minott’s versatility and eagerness to contribute may help solidify his place in the lineup. With each game, he looks to prove that this moment is truly his time to shine.
