Shedeur Sanders Nfl Draft Rookie Minicamp Cleveland

BEREA, OhioShedeur Sanders‘ journey to the NFL took an unexpected turn when the Cleveland Browns selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The pick, No. 144 overall, came as a shock, considering many analysts projected him to go within the top 10. Now, Sanders faces the challenge of proving his worth in a crowded quarterback room.

Despite being drafted later than anticipated, Sanders is determined to rise above the noise and secure a spot on the Browns’ 53-man roster. The task won’t be easy as he competes against other quarterbacks, including veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, drafted earlier in the third round.

In his first appearance at rookie minicamp, Sanders showcased his skills while donning the No. 12 jersey. Videos from practice revealed his poise as he threw passes to teammates, including receivers and tight ends. Coach Kevin Stefanski has emphasized that every action, whether on the field or in the meeting room, counts toward their evaluation.

“We’re evaluating everything they do,” Stefanski said after the practice. “It’s not just about one rep at rookie minicamp or one rep in an OTA.”

Sanders conducted extra throwing sessions after practice and emphasized the importance of hard work. He aims to learn the playbook while still being a positive presence in the community, highlighted by recent visits to local high schools.

While competing for a starting position, Sanders must demonstrate that he can thrive under pressure, especially with the weight of expectations tied to his father’s legacy, Deion Sanders, an NFL Hall of Famer. This legacy brings an additional spotlight that Sanders hopes to embrace, proving he’s more than hype.

As practices progress, both Sanders and Gabriel will have the opportunity to prove their talents further as the veteran quarterbacks stand in their way. “The guys are working really hard in the offseason program,” Sanders remarked, noting the importance of teamwork during drills.

The competition will intensify as the rookies join the veterans next week, leading to a crucial period in determining the team’s quarterback hierarchy. However, Sanders has already left a positive early impression, demonstrating not only the physical ability but also the mental readiness required in the NFL.
