Streaming Horror Classic Tremors Returns for Spooky Season

LOS ANGELES, CA — Fans of ’90s horror can rejoice as Universal Pictures has added the cult classic film Tremors to its streaming library just in time for the spooky season. The movie, which debuted in January 1990, has gained popularity over the years and holds an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a Certified Fresh label.
Tremors centers around the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada, which faces an unusual threat: gigantic, prehistoric worms capable of devouring anything in their path. As the residents start disappearing, local handymen Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) take it upon themselves to battle these deadly creatures.
The plot unfolds as Val and Earl, tired of their mundane lives, attempt to escape the town only to encounter a series of bizarre deaths. They soon join forces with a concerned seismologist, played by Finn Carter, who is studying odd seismic readings beneath the ground. Along the way, they are assisted by an eccentric couple, played by Reba McEntire and Michael Gross, in their fight for survival against the monstrous worms.
Directed by Ron Underwood, Tremors features a talented cast that includes Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire. The film is notable for its practical special effects, with most of the creature designs accomplished using animatronics—a feat that has contributed to its lasting appeal.
Despite being released in a month typically associated with less-prominent films, Tremors garnered attention from horror aficionados and went on to gross over $16 million on a budget of $10 million. Its successful home video release resulted in it becoming one of the most rented VHS titles of the year, leading to the evolution of a franchise.
Although Tremors 2: Aftershocks did not receive the same acclaim as its predecessor, the franchise has continued to thrive, producing a total of seven films, numerous direct-to-video releases, and even a television series. The only character to feature in all Tremors installments is Burt Gummer, the survivalist portrayed by Michael Gross.
As Halloween approaches, Tremors is sure to be a hit among horror fans seeking a blend of adventure, humor, and thrills in a nostalgic classic.
