Tesla to Begin Production of 2025 Model Y ‘Juniper’ Update This Month
Tesla is set to commence production of the highly anticipated ‘Juniper‘ update for the Model Y as early as this month. According to reports from *Car News China* and social media sources, the Shanghai gigafactory will start limited production of the updated model, with an initial output of just 12 vehicles per day.
The ‘Juniper’ update is expected to bring several significant changes to the Model Y, including a new rear design featuring a full-width rear light bar, similar to the Cybertruck. The vehicle will also receive sleeker headlights and new wheel designs, aligning with the recent ‘Highland‘ updates seen in the Model 3.
Interior changes are anticipated to include the removal of traditional steering column stalks, replaced by steering wheel buttons, and a touchscreen gear shift control. Leaked images show perforated leather or leatherette upholstery, suede-look trim, and ambient lighting. An 8.0-inch media screen for passenger climate controls in the second row is also rumored.
The updated Model Y may feature a larger battery pack, potentially a 96kWh unit for the Long-Range and Performance variants, which could increase the vehicle’s range. Aerodynamic tuning and suspension upgrades, similar to those in the Model 3, are also expected to enhance the driving experience and range.
Despite earlier statements from Tesla CEO Elon Musk that the Model Y Juniper would not debut until 2025, the accelerated production schedule suggests a possible launch in late 2024 or early 2025. This move is likely in response to increasing competition in the electric SUV segment, where the Model Y remains a top seller.
The production at the Shanghai gigafactory, which supplies vehicles to the Australian market, will initially be low volume but is expected to ramp up to full-scale production in the first half of 2025.
