Eagles Assess Rookies as 2025 Preseason Approaches

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — As the Philadelphia Eagles gear up for their first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, coaches are reflecting on rookies’ performances from the previous season. This evaluation helps to identify which players may fill the void left by key departures.
The Eagles lost several starters and role players this offseason, prompting General Manager Howie Roseman to seek replacements through free agency, trades, and the draft. Training camp, preseason games, and intrasquad practices will aid coaches in determining the final 53-man roster.
Will Shipley, a fourth-round draft pick from 2024, is vying for the backup running back position after Kenny Gainwell‘s departure. Shipley’s ability as a pass blocker and receiver will be crucial. He is competing with AJ Dillon, a former Packer known for his power running style.
At tight end, Kaylen Granson, Harrison Bryant, and EJ Jenkins are in a competitive race to back up Dallas Goedert, who has struggled with injuries. Granson offers versatility, having played multiple roles, while Bryant excelled at Florida Atlantic University as a pass-catching tight end. Jenkins, a former wide receiver, lacks the versatility of the others but has shown reliability in blocking.
In the secondary, Sydney Brown, Andrew Makuba, Tristin McCollum, and Andre Sam are battling for safety positions. With the trade of CJ Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles will have yet another new starter. Brown, drafted in 2023, looks to redeem himself after a challenging rookie season. Makuba is recovering from a shoulder injury, thus limiting his chances to shine. McCollum showed promise last season, while Sam, a former undrafted free agent, offers upside.
Rookie cornerback Mac McWilliams is also expected to earn playing time as a nickel corner. His ability to showcase flexibility may impact how the Eagles structure their safeties moving forward.
As the preseason unfolds, the Eagles will assess which players will make the roster and fulfill crucial roles in the upcoming 2025 NFL season.
