Florida State Swimmers Dominate Opening Day of FSU Invite

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State swimming and diving team kicked off the 2025-26 season with an impressive performance on Friday night at the Morcom Aquatics Center, winning 16 of 22 events during the first day of the FSU Invite.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are currently in first place, leading their respective competitions by over 40 points. The men have accumulated 185 points, placing them ahead of Purdue (120 points), West Virginia (101 points), and Tampa (80 points). The women have scored 175 points, outperforming Rice (130 points) and West Virginia (101.5 points).
“We had a great first day,” said FSU head coach. “We came out and really nailed some great relays; we won all four relays, which was amazing and huge points. Our divers were fantastic, winning every board. We’re excited and hope to continue this success tomorrow.”
Sophomore and freshman athletes notably shone, with each winning two individual events. Additionally, freshman Fanunza celebrated a relay victory in her collegiate debut. Another sophomore athlete also won three events by taking gold in one individual event and two relays.
The Seminoles began the meet on a high note with a sweep in the women’s 200 medley relay. The A team finished in 1:38.22, winning by nearly four seconds, featuring sophomore, Fanunza, McDade, and senior. The men’s team followed suit, with a victory from seniors and sophomores, posting a time of 1:25:22.
In individual events, Fanunza excelled in her first collegiate race, winning the 50 breaststroke in 28.78 seconds, narrowly finishing ahead of a fellow sophomore. Egri-Martin also had a strong showing, winning two events, including the 50 breaststroke, with a time of 24.37 seconds.
Florida State showcased its depth, achieving a 1-2-3 finish in both the 50 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke. In the 50 freestyle, McDade led with a time of 22.72 seconds, followed closely by a freshman and Caamano. Similarly, in the 200 breaststroke, Fanunza led with a time of 2:17.24.
Senior was crowned first in the men’s 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.60, while Velden and another senior placed first and second in the 100 backstroke. The divers also left a mark, achieving 1-2-3 finishes in their events, highlighting the team’s overall talent.
FSU closed the night by sweeping the 100 freestyle relay, with the women finishing in 41.00 seconds and the men in 35.14 seconds.
The final session of the FSU Invite will begin at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, featuring another 22 events. Admission is free at the Morcom Aquatics Center, with live results available online.
