NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2025 – Richard Gere opened up about his marriage to Alejandra Silva during a red carpet event for his documentary, *Wisdom of Happiness*. The actor shared exclusive insights into their relationship in an interview with HELLO!.
Gere, 76, revealed that a daily kiss from Silva is his secret to staying grounded. He playfully noted, “Kissing my wife. When she lets me, which isn’t all the time,” prompting laughter from Silva, who added, “Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Otherwise, it would be too easy, right?”.
The couple discussed how their shared practice of Buddhism influences their family life. Gere mentioned a recent parenting challenge: “Interesting you should bring that up, because we were just having a drama about one of our kids.” Silva’s approach, he said, is to calmly address issues: “I know I want to strangle you right now, but I’m going to take a deep breath and we’re going to talk through this. OK, now what’s going on?”.
Silva, a long-time practitioner of Buddhism, emphasized patience as a key tenet in their parenting. “Introducing the kids to Buddhism and what it means is important,” she stated. Gere praised his wife, saying, “She’s an incredible mother that way. I’ve actually learnt how to be a better father by watching her.”
Silva was born in La Coruña, Spain, to business executive parents, and attended school in England before returning to study marketing. They first met through family friends, but reconnected in 2014 in Italy. Silva recalled, “I’m not ignoring our age difference, but when there’s such a strong karmic energy, the problems disappear.”
The couple shares two sons, Alexander, born in 2019, and James, born in 2020. Gere’s eldest son, Homer, 25, is from his previous marriage to actress Carey Lowell. The family recently moved back to the United States after spending a year in Spain, where Gere noted Silva enjoyed the comfort of home.
Gere’s documentary explores the teachings of the Dalai Lama on inner peace. He noted Silva’s quick embrace of Buddhism: “She must have had previous lifetimes, because it happened very quickly for her.”
Silva agreed, stating, “Immediately, the door opened.” Gere emphasized that patience is the most critical lesson from Buddhism: “These things take time. But it’s like playing the piano – you have to practice and practice until you achieve something.” To read more, find the full interview in the latest issue of HELLO! on sale Monday in the UK.
