Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Polish counterpart Donald Tusk in Warsaw, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The leaders discussed the importance of NATO solidarity and the need for Western nations to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Canada’s defense spending, currently at 1.3% of GDP, was a focal point of the discussion, with Tusk advocating for all NATO members to meet the 2% spending target. Poland, boasting high military spending ratios, emphasized the importance of collective defense efforts.

Trudeau’s visit to Poland followed a recent trip to Kyiv, where he stood in solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The leaders commended Canada’s contributions to NATO initiatives and military training missions in support of Ukraine.

As the conflict in Ukraine intensifies, European leaders gathered in Paris to discuss additional military support for Kyiv. President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the critical juncture in the conflict and the need for sustained assistance for Ukraine.

Trudeau and Tusk’s meeting underscored the shared commitment to upholding democratic values and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty. The discussions also touched on bilateral cooperation in energy, nuclear technology, and regional security.

The engagement between Canada and Poland signals a united front against Russian aggression and a commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
