Glen Powell Discusses His Role in Hulu’s ‘Chad Powers’

Pasadena, California — Glen Powell had a unique experience while shooting his new role as Russ Holliday in the upcoming Hulu series ‘Chad Powers.’ At the premiere on Thursday, Powell described working with former NFL players as ‘really special.’
During the event at the Rose Bowl, Powell recalled his surreal moments on the field. ‘When I was actually on the field, it felt very immersive,’ he said. ‘They also had former NFL players playing with us, putting on pads. Guys that are 350, 6’7, sprinting at me with everything they got.’
Powell’s character, Russ Holliday, is a hotshot quarterback who disguises himself as Chad Powers to get a second chance after a failed college career. He noted the core theme of the show resonates with redemption. ‘It felt very much like Chad Powers in the fact that Russ Holliday is getting a second chance to be on that field,’ Powell explained.
The series features a pilot co-written by Powell and co-creator Mike Waldron, inspired by a sketch from NFL Films and Omaha Productions that appeared on ESPN+ as part of Eli’s Places. The first two episodes of ‘Chad Powers’ will premiere on September 30.
To prepare for his role, Powell collaborated with Patrick Mahomes’ coach, Nic Shimonek, and Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Pat O'Hara, who helped him understand the dynamics of being on a football team.
Powell’s journey from actor to football star highlights the creative team’s passion for the sport and the storytelling process, making this project not just a comedy but an homage to the game itself.
