Harrison Smith Minnesota Vikings London Game

WARE, ENGLAND — Harrison Smith has been a key player for the Minnesota Vikings for 14 seasons, but his role this year remains uncertain. The 36-year-old safety has averaged just 20 snaps per game after returning from an early-season illness that sidelined him for two weeks.

Smith has participated in only 39 defensive snaps this season, with 22 against the Cincinnati Bengals and 17 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This performance raised questions about his absence from the starting lineup and prompted speculation about the veteran’s future.

“I’m not sure yet,” Smith said when asked if he would play a bigger role in the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’ve been feeling like myself, but it’s been an adjustment.”

Head Coach Kevin O’Connell indicated that Smith’s playing time is expected to increase. His next appearance will mark his 200th career start in the NFL. “I think he’s going to get pretty close to that normal workload,” O’Connell said, which could allow for more defensive flexibility.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores commented on Smith’s situation, noting that it involves a pre-discussed ramp-up plan following his absence. “You can’t just throw somebody into an NFL game,” Flores explained. “We’ve got to be smart about our usage with him.”

Despite Smith’s limited snaps, players like Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson have performed well, contributing to the overall defense. Metellus described the situation as “extremely weird,” acknowledging the impact Smith has had on younger players like him.

“Anytime he’s not on the field, it feels different,” Metellus added. “I grew up watching 22, and I always wanted to play with him.”

As the Vikings deal with injuries to key players, including their offensive line and additional defensive positions, Smith’s experience could prove pivotal in overcoming these challenges. However, the final determination on his role will likely depend on how well he acclimatizes to the game after his time away.
