Nintendo Announces Switch 2 Launch on June 5 for $449.99

REDMOND, Wash. – Nintendo is set to launch its highly anticipated Switch 2 gaming console on June 5, with a retail price of $449.99 in the United States. The upgraded device promises enhanced hardware and innovative features designed to elevate the gaming experience for users.
The new system will feature a larger screen that delivers improved visuals and vibrant colors, alongside next-generation Joy-Con 2 controllers that incorporate mouse functionality for compatible games. Additionally, the controllers boast magnetic connectors for easy attachment to the console.
Following a reveal in January, this announcement provides more details about the features of Switch 2, which retains a similar design and functionality to the original Switch while boasting more powerful processing speeds.
Nintendo has described the Switch 2 as a comprehensive platform that enhances gaming communication, making it easier for players to connect and engage collaboratively. Games like “Mario Kart World” will be available on the launch date, with “Donkey Kong Bananza” arriving shortly after on July 17.
“The price is a bit higher than what was widely expected,” said Serkan Toto, founder of Kantan Games consultancy. “Nintendo likely considered the current inflationary trends and the pricing levels of competing consoles while determining their strategy.”
For pricing in Japan, the Switch 2 will cost 49,980 yen ($334) for the Japanese language system or 69,980 yen for a multi-language version, positioning it competitively in the market.
According to market analysts, the launch is expected to go smoothly as many anticipate a successful upgrade cycle, similar to the transition from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5. “Judging from the level of work in progress on the company’s balance sheet, Nintendo is likely aiming for shipments of over 10 million units in the first year,” stated Goldman Sachs analyst Minami Munakata.
The timing of the Switch 2 launch coincides with ongoing trade tensions, including tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imported goods, which could affect pricing strategies. Analysts indicate the lower pricing in Japan suggests the U.S. price reflects these tariff impacts.
Overall, with over 150 million Switch units sold since its release in 2017, Nintendo continues to adapt and expand its product offerings by investing in hardware upgrades and enhancing its gaming ecosystem.
