Tourist Falls into Sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur
A female tourist from India fell into an eight-metre-deep sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday after the walkway suddenly collapsed beneath her.
The incident occurred in the Dang Wangi area, where local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman reported that witnesses saw the pavement crumble as the victim was walking.
The woman, aged 48, is believed to have been swept away by an underground current after falling into the sinkhole. A search operation was launched, but there has been no immediate sign of her.
Rescuers have cordoned off the area and are utilizing an excavator to clear debris from the sinkhole. However, local authorities have not provided any updates regarding the condition of the victim.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohamad Isa indicated that the search for the woman is complicated by strong water flow underground, which may have carried her away.
The search operation requires meticulous planning due to potential impacts on public infrastructure, as disrupting pipes or drains could result in flooding in the vicinity.
It was noted that this location experienced a soil slip last year, which had been addressed, although the authorities are currently investigating the cause of the recent collapse.
Businesses in the area have been advised to close temporarily for safety reasons as the search continues.
The woman traveled to Malaysia with her husband and friends about two months ago and was scheduled to return home on Saturday.
