Team World Laver Cup 2025

San Francisco, CA — Team World finished Saturday night with a commanding 9-3 lead on the Laver Cup leaderboard after a decisive sweep in all three singles matches and doubles competition.

Their performance echoed the contrasting styles of renowned captains Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter. Team World is now within reach of claiming the Laver Cup trophy, needing just two more victories. Meanwhile, Team Europe faces a daunting challenge, requiring four wins to clinch the title.

Under the competition rules, the first team to reach 13 points wins the Cup. The dominating display on Saturday came after Team World had a rough start on the opening day, with only João Fonseca managing to secure a point for the team.

Aiming to shift the momentum, Team World dispatched three singles players who triumphed against higher-ranked opponents. Alex de Minaur had the standout performance with an impressive 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev. Following his lead, Francisco Cerundolo overtook No. 11 Holger Rune, and No. 5 Taylor Fritz capped the day with a remarkable upset over World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

In doubles, De Minaur partnered with rising star Alex Michelsen, overpowering Casper Ruud and Rune 6-3, 6-4 in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Chase Center. The highlight of the match came when De Minaur accidentally struck his racquet against his ear while returning a powerful shot but still managed to win the point.

After the match, a bandaged De Minaur praised Michelsen’s skills. “It was a good day at the office. I’m glad we were able to get the win for Team World,” he said. “Alex was unbelievable again today on the court. It was a pleasure to be by his side and watch him just dominate that court.”
