James Hinchcliffe to Test Formula 1 Car at Mugello

Italy, September 20, 2025 — Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe is set to test the Haas VF-23 Formula 1 car next week at Mugello Circuit. This test marks a significant crossover moment for Hinchcliffe, now 38, as he steps back behind the wheel of a racing machine after transitioning into a broadcasting role.
Hinchcliffe’s upcoming test has been confirmed by both Haas and F1TV, with plans for him to complete several laps as part of a feature segment. This opportunity follows his successful move into commentary, where he has provided insight for NBC and FOX Sports, and more recently, for F1TV.
Hinchcliffe previously won six races in IndyCar and was recognized as one of the series’ most charismatic drivers. His career, however, faced serious challenges, including a life-threatening crash in 2015 during practice for the Indianapolis 500. His quick recovery and return to racing earned him great respect in open-wheel racing.
The test at Mugello is part of Haas’s Testing Previous Cars (TPC) program, which aims to help train drivers and develop teams. Under new regulations, teams like Haas can engage in TPC tests for the first time, facilitating increased on-track development. Hinchcliffe will have a structured run plan for the test, aiming for a comprehensive experience rather than just a few laps.
The Haas team, a smaller outfit in F1, has recently partnered with Toyota, giving them additional resources for these test sessions. Hinchcliffe’s participation has excited fans from both IndyCar and Formula 1, highlighting the unique journey of a driver who has transitioned from racing to broadcasting while maintaining a deep connection to the sport.
