Lakers’ Head Coach JJ Redick on Dalton Knecht’s Future Role
LOS ANGELES — Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed that second-year guard Dalton Knecht will return to the team’s rotation during Friday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. This decision comes as the Lakers seek stability and production from their bench, following an offensive slump that has affected the team’s overall performance.
Knecht, selected 17th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, has struggled to find his footing since entering the league. After a promising college career at Tennessee, his confidence dipped last season, leading to inconsistent performances. However, with the Lakers facing injuries to key players, Redick is looking internally for solutions.
<p“Dalton will get a look tonight and he’ll get a look for the foreseeable future,” Redick stated. He emphasized that Knecht’s future playing time will depend on his effort and impact on the game, not solely on scoring. “Play hard. That’s the biggest point of emphasis for him all season,” Redick added.
Despite Knecht’s recent struggles, where he averaged only 5.4 points and 1.7 rebounds per game over 27 contests, Redick believes this is an opportunity for the young player to prove himself. Knecht logged limited minutes in back-to-back games against Memphis, with modest scoring numbers. Yet, he exhibited potential, shooting 4-of-4 in a previous game against the San Diego team in the G League.
Redick’s comments reflect a commitment to giving Knecht a consistent role, allowing him to regain his confidence. The Lakers’ bench has been inefficient, ranking last in the NBA with an average of just 25.3 points per game. Developing Knecht could provide a much-needed offensive spark.
The Lakers are currently facing absences from players like Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Gabe Vincent, leading to ongoing rotation adjustments. As the team prepares for its next game against the Grizzlies, Knecht hopes to take full advantage of this chance to solidify his place in the lineup.
“There’s a definite opportunity here for him, and whether he capitalizes on it will shape his future with the team,” Redick remarked.
