Mark Consuelos Remembers Proposal to Kelly Ripa After Brief Split

NEW YORK, NY — Mark Consuelos, 54, is recalling the emotional week that led to his spontaneous proposal to Kelly Ripa, 54. The couple had briefly split before reuniting just a week later. On the episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark” that aired on Monday, September 15, Consuelos described that week as “the most agonizing week of my life.” He expressed that he never wanted to feel that way again.
Consuelos revealed that after the break-up, Ripa was not answering his calls. However, fate brought them back together for a public relations appearance for the segment “Queen for the Day” on the talk show featuring Regis Philbin and Kathy Lee Gifford. “We both tried to get out of it,” Consuelos explained, adding that they called the PR person in an effort to avoid the event.
Despite their attempts, they both ended up attending. Consuelos fondly recalled seeing Ripa in a stunning Chanel jacket during the event, saying, “I was like, ‘Oh man, she looks so good. Boy, did I screw up.'” He found it difficult to speak with her at first, as Ripa was reluctant to engage.
Eventually, Consuelos managed to persuade Ripa to walk with him in Central Park. “She really didn’t want to, but I was convincing,” he said. The stroll led them back to his place, where he popped the question. Ripa initially responded, “Ask me when you’re serious,” to which Consuelos replied, “I am dead serious. Let’s fly to Vegas and get married.” They eloped in Las Vegas in May 1996.
Now, nearly 28 years later, Ripa and Consuelos celebrated their anniversary by reminiscing about their wedding day. On social media, Ripa wrote, “Viva Las Vegas ✨ Then ➡️ Now” alongside a throwback photo. She previously shared her belief in the power of Vegas weddings during an interview, stating, “I firmly believe in the power of Vegas weddings.” The couple has three children together: Michael, Lola, and Joaquin.
Consuelos recently praised their relationship, saying, “I really like my wife,” as he reflected on their enduring love. Ripa noted that their marriage works because of the trust they share and their ability to grow individually while supporting each other.
