Nick Reiner’s Arraignment Delayed Amid Murder Charges of Parents
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, was scheduled for arraignment on murder charges Wednesday, but the proceedings were delayed after his attorney requested to withdraw from the case.
Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including an allegation of using a knife in the killings of his parents, found dead in their Brentwood home on Dec. 14. Los Angeles County medical examiners determined both died from ‘multiple sharp force injuries.’
During a brief court appearance, Judge Theresa McGonigle granted attorney Alan Jackson‘s request to replace him with a public defender, Kimberly Greene. The arraignment has been rescheduled to Feb. 23.
Nicolas Reiner was taken into custody shortly after the incident. He was initially held on suicide watch but is no longer under that classification. A sheriff’s source confirmed that he remains in solitary confinement at Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
Public reports indicate that prior to his parents’ deaths, police had responded multiple times to the Reiner home for welfare checks and mental health-related calls involving Nick. He has a history of mental health issues, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
Nick Reiner’s previous struggles with addiction and his unstable living conditions have been documented over the years. He was known to experience relapses and periods of homelessness stemming from his drug use.
The Reiner family has expressed deep grief over the loss of their parents, pleading for respect and privacy during this grave time. Following the killings, tributes poured in from the entertainment community recognizing Rob Reiner’s influential career and Michele’s artistic contributions.
Nick Reiner’s case, deemed high-profile, will continue to attract media attention as the legal proceedings unfold. He remains in custody without bail, pending his next court date.
