Manchester United Parts Ways with Manager Ruben Amorim After Disappointing Tenure
MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United has officially dismissed manager Ruben Amorim following a string of disappointing results in the Premier League. The decision was announced on Monday, just two days after United’s draw against Leeds, which left the club in sixth place.
Appointed in November 2024, the 40-year-old Amorim was expected to revitalize the club. However, under his leadership, United finished 15th in the league last season, one of its worst showings in history. Sources indicated rising tensions between Amorim and the club’s hierarchy, particularly regarding his role and influence within the team.
“I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that,” Amorim stated in what became his final press conference at the club. His comments reflected frustrations about interference from club officials.
Despite hopes for improvement this season, the club has struggled to find consistency. Amorim has recorded the worst win ratio (32%) in the Premier League era for any Manchester United manager, alongside a concerning goals conceded average of 1.53 per game.
The club’s minority owner, Jim Ratcliffe, had previously expressed confidence in Amorim’s ability to turn things around, but ultimately, the situation resulted in a swift decision to terminate his contract.
Darren Fletcher, a former player and youth coach at United, has been appointed as interim manager. Fletcher steps in amid challenges, as the squad is currently experiencing injuries and international absences due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Amorim was the first managerial appointment after Ratcliffe acquired a stake in the club in early 2024. His firing marks the seventh managerial change since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, as the club continues to search for stable leadership.
