Trump Zelensky Vatican Meeting

VATICAN CITY, April 27, 2025 — President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for their first face-to-face discussion since a tense encounter two months ago. The meeting occurred during a memorial service for Pope Francis on Saturday, illustrating a significant moment in ongoing peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

National Security Advisor Michael Waltz expressed optimism after the meeting, which took place in the Vatican, suggesting that Trump is determined to end the war within his first 100 days back in office. Waltz stated that unlike previous administrations, Trump is committed to using diplomacy and is already making strides by encouraging discussions between both parties.

“This was a meat grinder of men and material,” Waltz said during an appearance on Fox News. “President Trump is determined to use diplomacy to bring this war to an end.” He indicated that multiple rounds of talks led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Steve Witkoff have already taken place.

Trump noted that he perceives a change in Zelensky’s demeanor, stating, “I see him as calmer. I think he understands the picture. And I think he wants to make a deal.” Both leaders were seen talking privately under the Vatican’s grand ceilings, highlighting the rarity of such direct engagement.

Reports indicate that the meeting was facilitated by European officials who anticipated that an in-person dialogue could assist in resolving the ongoing conflict. Trump’s comments following the meeting positioned him as adopting a tougher stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “I want him to stop shooting, sit down and sign a deal.”

Despite the hopeful tone, Trump admitted to frustrations over the apparent lack of commitment from both sides to cease hostilities, stating he was surprised by Russia’s missile strikes on Kyiv during the talks. Yet, he remains focused on pushing for a resolution, with significant actions expected in the coming week.

As speculation continues about the outcome of this high-stakes diplomatic engagement, Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on both Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict. “It was a beautiful meeting,” Trump said, reflecting on the grandeur of the Vatican setting.
