Strong Odour Reported in Burnaby and Vancouver Following Industrial Incident at Parkland Refinery
A strong odour was detected in both Burnaby and Vancouver on Sunday morning, causing concern among residents in the area. The Burnaby Fire Department responded to an industrial incident at the Parkland Refinery, which resulted in a vapour discharge and the release of a burning rubber or plastic and petroleum-type odour.
Burnaby Fire Chief Chris Bowcock provided an update, stating that the issue occurred during the startup process of one of the refinery’s units. Although there was some discharge, steam, and a strong odour, the situation was quickly and effectively managed, posing no risk to the community.
Metro Vancouver has begun assessing if any bylaws were violated during the incident, as Parkland Refining holds a valid air quality permit with the region. The assessment will be an ongoing process.
In response to the incident, Metro Vancouver has issued an air quality advisory applicable to the northwest and northeast parts of the region. Residents are advised to stay indoors, close windows, doors, and air intakes to minimize exposure to the odour. Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are encouraged to limit outdoor activities until the advisory is lifted.
Parkland Refinery stated that the issue was promptly addressed with the support of the Burnaby Fire Department and the RCMP. No injuries were reported. The refinery’s team is actively working to resolve the temporary issue, which may result in temporary elevated smoke, odours, and particulate matter in the vicinity.
