Robert Williams III Returns in Blazers’ Halloween Thriller

Portland, OR — Robert Williams III made a significant return to the court on Halloween, helping the Portland Trail Blazers secure a surprising 109-107 victory against the Denver Nuggets. This game marked Williams’ first appearance this season after sidelining for most of the past two years due to injuries.
Entering the game with 7:34 left in the first quarter, Williams contributed to his team in a limited role, playing just 11 minutes and 15 seconds. Despite this restricted time, he recorded four points, four rebounds, one block, and one assist, showcasing flashes of his full potential. His presence energized the Blazers, particularly among teammates who expressed excitement about his return.
“Rob was great,” said forward Deni Avdija. “We missed him on the court. He has a big presence in the paint, blocking shots, catching lobs. He’s very athletic. It’s good to have him back.” Williams wasted no time finding his rhythm, scoring his first points less than two minutes into his debut thanks to a layup from a pass by Blake Wesley.
Despite facing a minutes restriction, Williams had a notable impact, pulling down three offensive rebounds and delivering an assist on a fourth-quarter layup by teammate Toumani Camara. He also made a defensive stand by blocking a shot that led to a shot-clock violation against Denver.
After the game, Williams expressed his joy in returning. “I’ve been missing the game, man, so it just felt good to be out there,” he said. “It’s easy to play for 40 minutes, but to lock in at the key moments is a big thing.” Williams acknowledged the need to improve his conditioning, revealing he felt “a little winded” after the game.
Teammate Jerami Grant added some levity, teasing Williams about his intense conditioning regimen, which included going to the weight room post-game. “He worked about seven times a day on the road to recovery. But he’s been amazing for us tonight,” said Grant. “Putting pressure on the rim on both ends, blocking shots. He’s going to be amazing.”
Williams noted his goal is to integrate himself into the Blazers’ new offensive scheme, working alongside Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen. “Just giving (opposing) defenders a different matchup to look at,” he said.
As Williams continues to build up his playing time, the Blazers plan to gradually increase his minutes as his conditioning improves. His return on Halloween was not only timely for the team but had personal significance as well. “I just love Halloween,” Williams shared. “Costumes. Scary movies.” With a hopeful outlook, Williams is eager to contribute more as the season progresses.
