Will Stein Named Head Coach of Kentucky Football
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Will Stein has been named the new head coach of Kentucky football, announced by UK Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart on Monday. Stein, a Kentuckian, is a former player and coach who brings a rich background to the Wildcats.
At 36 years old, Stein is the son of UK alumni, with his father, Matt, playing football for the Wildcats. Growing up attending games at what was then Commonwealth Stadium, Stein’s journey in football came full circle as he takes on this significant role.
“Will Stein brings an outstanding track record of developing elite quarterbacks and leading some of the most dynamic and successful offenses in college football,” Barnhart said. “His deep connection to Kentucky … gives him a unique passion for this program and this community.”
Stein returns from the University of Oregon, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach over the last three seasons. His innovative approaches helped quarterbacks thrive in systems that catered to their strengths, producing Heisman Trophy finalists in consecutive years.
“I’m honored and excited,” Stein stated after the announcement. “This is truly a dream come true. My goal is to lead with purpose and help young men grow on and off the field.”
University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto expressed confidence in Stein, highlighting his ability as a developer of talent and his deep-rooted passion for the Wildcats. Stein aims to elevate the program, hoping to connect with fans known as Big Blue Nation.
Under Stein’s leadership, the Oregon Ducks secured a high-scoring offense averaging over 38 points per game, and he plans to bring that competitive spirit to Kentucky.
As Stein embarks on this new chapter, he emphasizes gratitude toward his mentors and eagerness to start working with the team. He is also looking forward to coaching the Wildcats next fall.
