Tyquan Thornton Shines in Chiefs’ Bid for Redemption
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After a challenging start to his NFL career with the New England Patriots, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton is finding new life with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thornton was drafted by the Patriots in 2022 but faced a series of injuries that limited his playtime and production.
Thornton’s troubles began with a collarbone injury in preseason, sidelining him for the first four games of his rookie season. In 2023, he suffered another shoulder injury, resulting in additional missed time. Eventually, he accumulated just 47 yards in six games before being released by the Patriots after Week 10 in 2024.
“That was a tough time for me,” Thornton said. “But I learned a lot and took it all as a growing experience.”
Being cut from the Patriots turned out to be a blessing, as he joined the Chiefs and quickly became a part of their plans. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid recognized his potential, aided by a strong recommendation from Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
“Bill Belichick called me and talked to me about him,” Reid revealed. “He thought that Tyquan was a good player with great potential.”
As the Chiefs prepare for their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Thornton is stepping up in the absence of other key receivers. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy stated, “Tyquan has been ready the whole entire time he’s been with us.”
In the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, Thornton made a significant impact by catching a 38-yard pass. Nagy emphasized the importance of trust among players, stating, “When you get an opportunity, you’ve got to make a play, and Tyquan did that.”
This Sunday, Thornton is expected to play a vital role, particularly with fellow receivers Rashee Rice and Jalen Royals sidelined. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub praised Thornton’s speed and blocking abilities, indicating he will be crucial on special teams too.
“He’s got great speed and is a willing blocker,” Toub said, preparing the team for the challenges ahead.
Teammate JuJu Smith-Schuster acknowledged Thornton’s hard work and adaptability. “He’s a guy that does his best,” Smith-Schuster noted. “He plays hard and fast wherever he’s needed.”
Thornton himself remains focused on executing his role alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “I’ve just got to make a play,” he said about his responsibilities.
The Chiefs look to bounce back from their previous loss and capitalizing on their opportunities this Sunday against the Eagles.
