Apple TV 4K: Upgrades and Speculations Ahead of 2025 Model

Cupertino, California – Apple announced the latest version of its set-top streaming device, the Apple TV 4K, in October 2022. This third-generation model incorporates the A15 Bionic chip, supports HDR10+, and features a redesigned Siri Remote that now charges via USB-C. With only one Apple TV model in its lineup, the anticipation builds for a new version expected in late 2025.

The Apple TV 4K is designed to provide high-quality streaming with 4K resolution and support for both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. The device features a simple black box design, downscaled in size and weight from its predecessors and eliminating the need for an internal fan. The performance improvements from the A15 chip promise up to 50% better CPU and 30% better GPU performance compared to the previous model.

According to Apple, the efficiency of the A15 chip allows the new TV box to consume up to 30% less power, making it more sustainable. Pricing for the Apple TV 4K starts at $129 for the 64GB model with Wi-Fi and $149 for the 128GB model, which includes gigabit Ethernet and Thread mesh networking support.

“The Apple TV 4K generally delivers a snappier experience, particularly for gaming,” said Darrell Etherington of TechCrunch. However, Etherington noted that users with the 2021 model may not perceive performance enhancements as significantly transformative in everyday use.

Regarding gaming, Apple has optimized the Apple TV 4K to handle more graphically intense titles, but feedback from several reviewers indicated limitations compared to dedicated gaming consoles. “It appears less capable than gaming systems like PlayStation and Xbox,” noted Eli Blumenthal from CNET, citing performance gaps in games like NBA 2K23 during gameplay.

The redesigned Siri Remote features a clickpad that supports gestures and has volume control and a dedicated power button for convenience. Users, including Chris Welch from The Verge, remarked that while the USB-C charging port is an improvement, they wished for more advanced features in future iterations of the remote.

Reviews of the Apple TV 4K have varied, with some praising the interface and overall experience while others suggest that the enhancements might not be compelling enough for current Apple TV owners to upgrade. “If you have a 2021 model, waiting may be wise as a new version is on the verge of being released in late 2025,” Etherington noted.

The entry-level model runs on tvOS 18, featuring an interface that allows users to interact effortlessly with Siri, access a variety of apps, and manage streaming content with ease. Notably, the tvOS 18 update introduces features like new screen savers and enhanced audio capabilities.

As anticipation builds for a new Apple TV, analysts suggest that potential features of the next model may include support for enhanced video-calling capabilities and integration of advanced smart home functionalities. “The timeline for improved connectivity features may shift the landscape of home entertainment,” implied Ming-Chi Kuo, an acclaimed Apple analyst.

As it stands, the existing Apple TV 4K remains available through online Apple stores, third-party retailers, and Apple’s own retail locations, catering to consumers looking for high-stakes streaming without the latest version’s better specs.
