Knicks Stun Celtics in Game 1 of Eastern Conference Semifinals

BOSTON, MA — The New York Knicks overcame a 20-point deficit to defeat the Boston Celtics 108-105 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on May 5, 2025. The Knicks’ victory puts them ahead 1-0 in the series against the defending NBA champions.
New York had struggled against Boston during the regular season, losing all four meetings. However, they rallied after trailing significantly in the second half. Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby each scored 29 points for the Knicks, creating key plays that turned the momentum.
Brunson, who also had five assists, emphasized the importance of resilience. ‘We told each other just keep believing. Just keep fighting and sticking together,’ he said. ‘There wasn’t going to be a 20-point shot.’
The Celtics had notable performances from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who both scored 23 points. However, their struggles from beyond the arc became crucial as they missed an NBA playoff-record 45 three-point shots. Brown acknowledged after the game, ‘In those moments, when the other team has momentum, we can’t just fire up threes.’
Boston was without Kristaps Porzingis for part of the game due to an illness, which, according to coach Joe Mazzulla, affected their game plan. ‘It’s no excuse. We had plenty of opportunities,’ he said.
The Knicks took the lead in overtime with a three-point play by Anunoby shortly before Mikal Bridges made a late-game steal that secured the win. ‘We played with great grit and determination,’ Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night.
