Raygun Shines In Olympic Breaking Event Despite Tough Competition

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, made its Olympic debut in Paris, sparking excitement and debate. Fans were all in as they watched the street dance battles unfold, with a panel of judges deciding the winners.

One performer who caught the attention of viewers was 36-year-old Rachael Gunn, who goes by the name Raygun. Hailing from Australia, she’s not just a dancer but also a college professor with a PhD in cultural studies, researching breaking and hip-hop.

Raygun’s journey is quite unique. She started breaking later in life compared to many dancers, only stepping into her first battle in 2012. On top of that, she was competing against much younger dancers, including a 16-year-old who also qualified for the Olympics.

Throughout her battles against contenders from Lithuania, France, and the U.S., social media buzzed about her distinct moves, like her kangaroo hops and lively floor work. Even though she didn’t win any rounds, her confidence and creativity amazed the audience and judges alike.

In her battles, Raygun faced off against Dominika “Nicka” Banevič, a talented 17-year-old from Lithuania who eventually won a silver medal. Despite losing every round, which saw her scoring 0 against her opponents, she still left a memorable impression.

Raygun believes that while younger dancers may bring strength and speed, older performers can add a level of maturity that is vital in dance. Her approach had many spectators inspired, reminding them that pursuing dreams often requires courage and passion.
