San Diego FC Set for Riveting Clash Against LAFC This Weekend

San Diego, California — The highly anticipated match between San Diego FC and Los Angeles FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night marks the first-ever meeting between these two Southern California teams. Scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET, this game will not only showcase the budding rivalry but also serve as a significant moment for San Diego FC’s CEO, Tom Penn, a pivotal figure in the formation of both clubs.
As the leader of San Diego FC, Penn previously served as LAFC’s first president, helping shape what is now known as one of the league’s most successful franchises. This weekend’s match serves as a litmus test for the new club as it aims to compete with established teams in the Major League Soccer (MLS) hierarchy.
“Just really looking forward to seeing another home match,” Penn told MLSsoccer.com on Thursday. “The excitement around a San Diego sports team hosting an LA sports team brings a lot more attention and interest.”
San Diego’s cooler, more relaxed identity often contrasts with Los Angeles’s bustling, fame-driven atmosphere. This clash is heightened by a history of competition, especially following the departures of the NBA’s Clippers and the NFL’s Chargers from San Diego northward.
The inaugural season for San Diego FC commenced with a stunning away victory against the defending MLS Cup champions, invigorating their fanbase as they prepare for Matchday 6 at home. Hundreds of supporters traveled for that victory and are eager to see the team replicate that spirit this Saturday.
<p“Over time, it will be interesting to see how the SoCal derbies shape up,” Penn said. “There’s a natural adjacency and intensity, especially after watching the Padres–Dodgers dynamic. We aim to represent San Diego in the global soccer arena for years to come.”
The identities of San Diego FC and LAFC have been shaped by minimalist branding and strategic alignment with their communities. Both franchises began with simple names and color schemes—San Diego’s “Chrome & Azul” and Los Angeles’ “Black & Gold.” Furthermore, both teams have prioritized the development of a strong supporter culture.
However, disparities exist in their trajectories. “The pace of our development has been significantly faster, transitioning from concept to match day in under two years compared to LAFC’s timeline,” Penn noted, attributing the quick turnaround to Snapdragon Stadium’s availability.
He emphasized that, unlike the crowded sports landscape in Los Angeles, San Diego’s soccer interest has been nurturing a community eager for major league soccer, with the Padres being the only other professional men’s sports team in the region.
<p“From the beginning, there’s been huge excitement within the community,” he explained. “In LA, we faced skepticism due to the existing competition. Here, the enthusiasm has been overwhelming.”
The focus on youth development is becoming increasingly apparent as San Diego FC progresses through its first season. Penn spoke on the benefits of aligning with the Right to Dream (RTD) youth academy model, which facilitates talent development across various international locations, including Ghana, Egypt, and Denmark.
<p“While we are a startup in MLS, we have a well-defined style of play and an emerging young pipeline,” he stated. "Twenty percent of our roster consists of players 22 or younger, and our upcoming academy class will include top prospects from our alliance.”
<p“The aim is to build the US version of the Right to Dream Academy from the ground up,” Penn continued. “We started scouting young talent in our region, aiming to initiate the scholarship process soon.”
Despite facing challenges, such as losing designated player Lozano to injury, San Diego FC has performed admirably with a record of 2 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws, placing them fourth in the Western Conference and 10th in the Supporters’ Shield standings. Much of this early success comes from their dynamic players, including standout performers who challenge veteran opponents.
<p“Each time our players have transitioned leagues, they've risen to the occasion,” Penn remarked, discussing the importance of his squad's cohesion. “With Lozano’s return, we anticipate a more dynamic offensive partnership on the wings, enhancing our attacking threats.”
As kickoff approaches, anticipation continues to build for this historic clash in Southern California soccer culture, promising excitement for players and fans alike.
